The "special introduction" to the 1989 edition of the Feynman Lectures on Physics contains the following paragraph:

Feynman was once asked by a Caltech faculty member to explain why spin 1/2 particles obey Fermi-Dirac statistics. He gauged his audience perfectly and said, "I'll prepare a freshman lecture on it." But a few days later he returned and said, "You know, I couldn't do it. I couldn't reduce it to the freshman level. That means we really don't understand it."

An undergraduate lecture is not the same as a casual conversation, or a newspaper editorial, however, but it does not presume any unusual erudition regarding higher mathematics. Feynman was also asked to say what he won the Nobel Prize for in 15 seconds, and he replied that if he could summarize it in 15 seconds, it wouldn't have been worth the Nobel prize.
